Go n-éirí go geal libh!
We said farewell to Claudia, Grace, Leah, Charlie, Conor, Iobhar and James yesterday. Thank you all for your fantastic contribution to Thomastown NS and we wish you every success in your respective secondary schools.
Go n-éirí go geal libh! The ice-cream van made a very welcome return to the school once again this year to celebrate the start of the summer holidays. Judging by the faces in the photos, the ice-cream was most definitely enjoyed by everyone!
The pupils in 3rd to 6th Class took part in the Finals of our Euro 2020 School Soccer League this week. In the Shield Final, Holland defeated Germany while in the Plate Final, Italy overcame France. The Cup Final between Belgium and Spain was a very tense affair that finished on a score-line of 2-2 at the end of normal time. There then followed a nail-biting penalty shoot-out which had to go to sudden-death with Belgium eventually emerging victorious. Well done to everyone who took part over the past few weeks and thank you to Charlie, Iobhar and James for their impressive refereeing performances in the three finals!
We were delighted to take part in a Godolphin Ireland Virtual Tour via Zoom this week. The tour involved an introduction to Godolphin, an equine vet explaining their role on a thoroughbred stud farm, an overview of the daily yard routine, watching a farrier at work and discussing the role of the farrier, learning about the work of an equine dentist as well as an introduction to the careers available in the industry.
Many thanks to Godolphin Ireland for the lovely goodie bags we received as well! Sports Day finally made its long awaited return this year following its postponement last year due to the school closure. The pupils from Junior Infants to 6th Class took part in various events with their teams. There were the usual sports activities and races as well as a poster competition, street art, a quiz and even an attempt at the Cha Cha Slide Dance! Great work as usual from everyone.
Some of the finishing touches to our school extension were completed over the last few days. We're really happy with how it has all turned out!
We are delighted to have a signed Tipperary jersey from Niall Heffernan, our past pupil, hanging proudly in our new school extension. The signed jersey is also complimented by photos of Niall when he brought the All Ireland Under 20 Cup to the school and Niall in action in the 2019 Munster Under 20 Hurling Final. Thank you Niall - the jersey will be an inspiration to future generations for many years to come!
Another casualty of the school closures has been the lack of opportunity to organise a presentation for the Under 11 Gaelic Football and Under 11 Ladies Football teams who competed in the Cumann na mBunscol County Finals back in November 2019. Thankfully, we managed to rectify that on Thursday when Ronan Maher (Tipperary Senior Hurler) paid us a visit and presented the medals to the pupils involved. Ronan was very generous with his time and also spoke to the pupils, posed for lots and lots of photographs and signed lots and lots of autographs as well!
Thank you to Ronan for the visit, we were delighted to see him and we look forward to supporting him on July 4th when Tipperary play in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship Semi Final. Following multiple school closures over the past year, we were delighted to finally get the chance to officially raise our GAA 5 Star flag and be recognised as a GAA 5 Star Centre. This status is awarded to Primary Schools that undertake to deliver a programme of Gaelic Games activity that is age-appropriate and meets the developmental needs of children within the school.
The official flag raising was performed by Niall Heffernan, our past pupil and Munster and All Ireland Under 20 Hurling Champion 2019 with Tipperary. Niall was also kept busy speaking to the pupils, posing for photographs and signing plenty of autographs - a great ambassador for the school! In celebration of National Cumann na mBunscol Week 2021, we were delighted to take part in a number of activities last week to show the importance of Gaelic Games in our school community. We had our weekly GAA coaching sessions with Seanie O'Neill for all the pupils in the school, completed some GAA related art activities, had a visit from Ronan Maher (Tipperary Senior Hurler) who presented us with our Under 11 Gaelic Football and Under 11 Ladies Football medals from November 2019 and had the official raising of our GAA 5 Star flag by Niall Heffernan (our past pupil and All Ireland Under 20 Hurling Champion 2019). Another busy and active week!
