Best wishes to Emma Hogan, Transition Year student in St. Anne's Secondary School Tipperary Town, who has reached the Southern Regional Final of the Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture competition.
Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture is an all island competition for secondary school students which takes elements such as fashion, design, engineering and environmental sustainability and transforms them into a creative contest like no other. Inspiring young designers in second level education to use everyday junk materials to create striking works of wearable art, the competition calls on all budding fashionistas to see if they have what it takes to be crowned King or Queen of the upcycled catwalk. Hitting its ninth year running, Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture has already captivated over 24,000 students, 7,000 teachers and 100,000 audience members. Emma's design is called "Harlequeen" and she used the frame of a lamp shade, an old goal post net, the centres of toilet rolls, egg cartons, part of a felt hat, wine corks, old shoes, draw string bags, used cassette film from a photo printer and electric fence wire to create her design. Members of the public can vote for Emma's design and help her reach the National Final by: 1. Logging on to app.junkkouture.com 2. Click voter registration/log in 3. Register with phone number/email 4. Click "to get voting" 5. Search for "HARLEQUEEN" in the South region and vote everyday from February 18th - February 22nd 6. Share design on Facebook The 5th and 6th Class pupils participated in the Dell Vex Robotics Programme once again this year. The pupils learned about Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM). They had to design, build and program a robot to compete in a competition organised by Dell EMC.
In addition to STEM, the pupils acquired other skills such as project management, presentation skills, teamwork, leadership and PR. Following all of the preparations, 5th and 6th Class travelled to the Dell EMC campus in Limerick to participate in the competition. The day was packed full of activities and events for everyone including a PR presentation, a judges' review and inspection of the robot, school project and engineering logbooks as well as the robot driving skills challenge and robot programming challenge. There were 25 schools from Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Kerry participating on the day. Good luck to Sam Hall (6th Class) who is a member of the South Tipperary Under 13 soccer squad that will play Roscommon in the All Ireland Semi Final on Sunday in Cahir.
Congratulations once again this week to Jake Flannery who was part of the Ireland Under 20 Rugby team that defeated Scotland in the second round of the Six Nations Championship. The next fixture in the competition for Ireland will be against Italy on February 22nd in Italy.
