Thank you to Anthony Casey, manager of Spar in Golden, who came to the school to make a presentation to the 6th Class girls team who won the County Soccer Final. Anthony presented the girls with new footballs and training equipment.
Congratulations to the 6th Class Boys who won the FAI Primary Schools' County Tipperary Soccer Final in St. Kevin's FC, Two Mile Borris. A total of 104 teams had originally entered the competition and the final 12 teams made their way to New Hill Park on April 14th to see who would become the Tipperary County Champions. The boys played Burgess NS, Youghalarra NS and Moyglass NS in the group stages and qualified to play Moneygall NS in the County Semi Final. Having finished level after normal time, the game went to extra time. With the Thomastown boys leading by a goal with less than twenty seconds remaining, Moneygall NS managed to find an equaliser to send the game to penalties. There then followed a dramatic penalty shootout which went to sudden death before Thomastown emerged victorious after eight penalty kicks had been taken by each team. Following the drama of the Semi Final, the boys began the first half of the County Final v Grangemockler NS confidently and led 2-0 at half time. However, the second half saw a spirited Grangemockler comeback. With Thomastown leading 3-2 with seconds remaining in injury time, Grangemockler NS somehow managed to find an equaliser to send the final to extra time. Despite the setback of having to play more extra time and with lots of tired bodies all over the field, the Thomastown boys gave a heroic display and determined not to go through another penalty shootout, they managed to create a goal to win the game 4-3 in extra time. Having played five games along with going through extra time twice and a sudden death penalty shootout, the Thomastown NS boys were crowned FAI Primary Schools' County Tipperary Soccer Champions for the very first time.
With the girls having won their County Final before Easter, Thomastown NS now has the distinction of completing a unique and historic double as no school has ever won both finals before. The two teams now travel to the Waterford Institute of Technology Sports Campus on April 20th to represent Tipperary in the Munster Finals. Well done to all the pupils who have helped to create another chapter in the school's history. Good luck to Jake Flannery, past pupil of Thomastown NS, who will play for Tipperary in the Munster Minor Football Championship v Cork in Páirc Uí Rinn, Cork tomorrow (Wednesday, April 13th)
Well done to all the boys in 4th, 5th and 6th Class who travelled to St. Kevin's FC in Two Mile Borris to take part in the FAI County Tipperary Primary Schools Soccer Blitz. All three teams performed exceptionally well despite the wet and cold conditions and a great day out was had by all. All of the teams played three games in their group and as the 6th Class team won their group, they then had to play Mullinahone NS in a playoff to see who would progress to the County Final. Mullinahone NS had won all their group games comprehensively and they proved to be very tough opposition. Despite this, the Thomastown boys gave a very assured performance and won 3-2. They now look forward to playing in the County Final of the competition.
