Over the past few weeks, 5th & 6th Class have carried out various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) based experiments and challenges while they have been at home. These included:
The pupils were given the task of creating the ideal conditions for watercress and runner bean seeds to germinate using only cotton wool, paper towels, water and heat. Once they had their seeds placed in the containers, the pupils made sure that they were kept watered and warm to help the seeds to germinate. "Green fingers" aplenty as you'll see from the photos below! For the upside down water experiment, the pupils had to use a glass of water and a piece of card to show atmospheric pressure at work. The force from the atmospheric pressure holds the card up and the low pressure zone in the glass prevents the water’s weight from pushing the card down. The pupils were so confident (despite the somewhat nervous facial expressions in the photos) that the water would remain in the glass when turned upside down, they were even willing to put the glass of water over their head. We're delighted to report that there were no major spillages and there were no wet heads as a result either!
Over the past few weeks, 5th & 6th Class have carried out various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) based experiments and challenges while they have been at home. These included:
For the perfect paper aeroplane, the pupils had to design, build and test different types of paper aeroplanes. When designing the paper aeroplane, the pupils had to make sure that it would stay in the air for as long as possible and would also travel as far as possible. They then had to fly their aeroplanes and measure how far they travelled. The ice cube string experiment involved examining the chemical reaction that occurs between water and salt. The materials used were an ice cube, some salt and a piece of string and the aim of the experiment was to see how the salt reacts with the ice cube which then allows it to pick up a piece of string. Only using materials available to them at home, the pupils had to try and build the tallest possible freestanding tower that they could. The only rule that they had to follow was that the tower could not be supported or propped up against anything. The pupils then had to measure the final result. See some of their amazing results below. Excellent work as always from everyone! Pupils in 3rd & 4th class have completed a selection of lego-building challenges recently. They have shown their creativity by building robots, animals, games, charging stations, desk organisers and even photo frames. Very impressive work from everyone!
3rd & 4th Class did some project work on koalas recently. Here is a selection of the excellent work that they did.
While working incredibly hard to keep up to date with all the core subjects each day, 5th & 6th Class have also been making time to get out for a few pucks as well. Keep it up everyone, the first touch is looking good!
Despite the lockdown, the pupils in 5th & 6th Class have been determined not to let their fitness levels slip. While at home, they've been doing planks, frog hops, crocodile reaches, quick feet, crab stretches, overhead squats, ball co-ordination skills, wall sits...and they still have more activities planned for next week. A selection of their many, many, many photos and videos can be viewed below. Next stop is "Ireland's Fittest Family"...

5th & 6th Class were busy this week creating their own bird feeders and animal enrichment toys for their pets from materials they had at home. They used empty cartons and plastic bottles to create the bird feeders. The animal enrichment toys were made from cardboard tubes and treats were placed inside. Enrichment is an activity for animals to encourage their natural behaviours. Some examples of their work can be seen below. Needless to say, there were lots of well-fed birds and happy dogs, cats and even goats all around Thomastown this week! |
